  • Detailed Description

The chaff cutter, also known as a forage chopper or straw crusher, is mechanized equipment widely utilized in agriculture and animal husbandry. Its primary function is to chop and crush crop stalks (such as corn, wheat, and rice straw) and various pastures into short segments or shredded materials. This equipment serves feed processing for herbivorous livestock (cattle, sheep, horses, deer) and extends to industries including papermaking, organic fertilizer production, and biomass energy processing, acting as key equipment for agricultural waste recycling and scaling livestock farming.

The machine consists of a feeding mechanism, cutting mechanism, and transmission mechanism, categorized structurally into disk and drum types. Available in a standardized series with multiple specifications, it operates via electric motors, diesel engines, or gasoline engines (small models support 220V). Operators must strictly adhere to safety protocols during use.

Working Principle

The machine features a thickened, fully steel-welded frame for structural integrity and deformation resistance. The core system comprises four modules:

  • Feeding Mechanism: Equipped with anti-slip pressing rollers, it automatically and evenly feeds stalks of varying moisture levels into the cutting zone, eliminating manual feeding jams and safety risks.
  • Cutting Mechanism: Utilizes alloy steel blades treated with a special quenching process. The precise coordination between dynamic and static blades ensures a clean, effort-saving shearing operation compared to traditional chopping.
  • Transmission Mechanism: Employs standard V-belts and universal joints, ensuring smooth transmission, low noise, and minimal power loss.
  • Safety Devices: Features a fully enclosed safety guard and overload protection system that halts the machine upon encountering hard objects, preventing blade damage or motor stalls.

During operation, the power source drives the blade disc at high speeds. Stalks enter the cutting chamber via the pressing rollers and are instantly cut into uniform segments. Models equipped with a shredding function further process the material into soft filaments, directly discharging them. The entire process requires no secondary handling.

Application Scenarios

The product matrix spans from small household to large industrial grades, suitable for diverse operational scales:

  • Small Household Models: Driven by a 220V power supply and equipped with mobility wheels for single-person transport. Processing capacity: 500-800 kg/h (dry forage). Cut length: 3-50mm (adjustable). Designed for rural courtyard small-scale farming.
  • Medium Farm Models: Powered by 3-15kW 3-phase motors. Processing capacity: 3-8 t/h (green stalks). Features automatic feeding for continuous operation, tailored for daily feed processing in medium-sized cattle and sheep farms.
  • Large Towable Models: Connects directly to tractors or diesel engines, enabling field operation without external power. Capacity: 10+ t/h. Built-in throwing mechanism discharges directly into transport vehicles. Designed for large forage plants and silage bases.
  • Multi-functional Shredding All-in-One: Integrates a shredding chamber with the cutting function to produce soft filaments, increasing livestock intake by over 30%. Interchangeable screens enable crushing and pulping functions.

Operating Precautions

  • Safety protection equipment must be complete during operation.
  • Operators must understand machine performance. Operating under the influence of alcohol, illness, or severe fatigue is strictly prohibited. Keep people and objects away from moving parts during operation.
  • Minors under 16 and personnel unfamiliar with the machine's operation rules are prohibited from operating it independently.
  • Ensure the workspace is spacious and equipped with fire safety equipment.
  • When feeding materials, operators must stand to the side of the feeding hopper. Never reach into the hopper guard. Prevent wood, metal, stones, and other hard objects from entering the machine.
  • Reverse rotation of the blade disc is strictly prohibited.
  • The machine must operate at the specified speed; over-speeding and overloading are strictly prohibited.
  • When replacing fasteners for dynamic and static blades, use 8.8-grade bolts and 8-grade nuts. Do not substitute with lower-grade hardware.
  • If abnormal noise occurs during operation, stop the machine immediately. Power must be disconnected before inspection; troubleshooting while the machine is running is strictly prohibited.
  • Maintain a proper feed rate; excessive feeding causes overload and stalling, while insufficient feeding reduces efficiency.
  • Before stopping, shift the gear handle to the '0' position and let the machine idle for approximately 2 minutes to blow out internal dust and debris before shutting down.

Safety Operation & Maintenance

To ensure personnel safety and maximize equipment lifespan, strictly adhere to the following standards:

  • Safety Protection: Never reach into the feed or discharge ports. Do not stand on the feeding platform to touch the pressing rollers during operation. Wear necessary protective gear and ensure guards are intact.
  • Standardized Operation: Inspect fasteners and lubrication prior to startup. Remove hard objects (stones, iron) from materials before feeding. In case of blockages, immediately shut down and disconnect power; never troubleshoot while running.
  • Maintenance: Regularly check blade sharpness; sharpen or replace dull blades. Replace gearbox lubricating oil periodically. After operation, run the machine idle briefly to clear internal debris before disconnecting power.
